Midwifery Services
What is a Midwife?
Certified nurse midwives (CNM) are advanced practice registered nurses (RN) that specialize in women's reproductive health and childbirth.
They deal with pregnancy, birth, newborn care, and postpartum health. They often work closely with OB/GYNs. Midwife services are usually recommended for low-risk pregnancies. However, women with high-risk pregnancies can still receive midwifery care in collaboration with OB/GYNs.
Midwife Education Requirements
Certified nurse midwives are highly educated and experienced. They must first hold a registered nurse license, which requires an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).
They usually go on to earn a master of science in nursing (MSN) or even a doctoral degree, which requires at least 2 years of clinical experience.
What Does a Midwife Do?
Certified nurse midwives provide care for pregnant women and their babies during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. They can practice at clinics, birth centers, hospitals, and even your home.
Midwives provide a variety of services, such as:
- Assisting with pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum care
- Prenatal services, such as ultrasounds and blood work
- Education on reproductive health
- Natural family planning services
- Gynecological care
- Pap tests and breast exams
- STI screenings
Why Should I Work With a Midwife?
A certified nurse midwife (CNM) can be a great choice for women seeking holistic, personalized care on their pregnancy journey. Here are a few benefits of working with one:
- Patient-centered care. Certified nurse midwives provide personalized care based on your preferences and desires, allowing you to create the birth plan that works best for you.
- Expertise in natural childbirth. Certified nurse midwives honor the body’s natural processes. They are educated and trained to help women achieve vaginal birth with minimal interventions, if desired.
- Communication and support. Certified nurse midwives are compassionate, supportive, and foster deep trust with their patients. This helps them to advocate for their patients and collaborate with physicians if complications arise.
